We can curse the existence of Snapchat, even cite Ellen Degeneres' Oscars photo for this downfall, but there’s no getting around it. The selfie is no longer a teenager trend; it’s a worldwide staple. With more and more people wielding smartphones with front-facing cameras, snapping amateur self-portraits have become the norm. Even Apple acknowledged their power, creating a section specifically for selfie sharing apps.
And as it turns out, Bostonians are guilty of capturing tons of said self-shot photographs. And, as the picture below illustrates, no one – not even Speaker of the House Bob DeLeo or Boston Mayor Marty Walsh – can defend themselves against the selfie’s allure. Fitting, then, that the Hub ranks number 13 in TIME’s list of cities with the most selfies taken.
After assessing over 400,000 Instagram photos tagged “selfie” that included geographic coordinates and were uploaded in a ten-day period, the media company ranked 459 cities around the world before cutting the list to the top 100.
Taking first place was Makati City and Pasig, Philippines, with 258 selfie-takers per 100,000 people. New York City then popped up in the list, stealing the second spot with 202 selfie-takers per 100,000, followed by two other American areas: Miami (155 selfie-takers per 100,000) and Anaheim and Santa Ana, California (147 selfie-takers per 100,000).
Our beloved Boston comes in 13th with 88 selfie-takers per 100,000 people, between Oslo, Norway (89 selfie-takers per 100,000 people) and Newark, New Jersey ( 84 selfie-takers per 100,000 people).
Perhaps, if we follow in the footsteps of Walsh and DeLeo, we could add ‘Selfie Capital of the World’ to the city’s list of accolades. Until then, we’ll be in front of the bathroom mirror finding our better side and perfecting our one-handed, photo-snagging form.
